Saying No

Sometimes, my brain gets too full.

There are too many people to please, too many jobs to complete, too many things to clean up, too many worries, too much PRESSURE – it feels like I’m going to explode! I get overwhelmed quite easily and often have to rationalise the situation and realise that it’s not the end of the world to say no to a dinner invitation, to put that on tomorrow’s to do list, to let my room get a bit messy or to have a takeaway instead of cooking one night.

When I feel overwhelmed, there are certain things that I do to try and calm down:

  • Make a list.
  • Prioritise.
  • Cry/Rant/Beg for rationalisation from friend/mum/sibling/cat (whoever is free).
  • Be kind to myself: bubbly baths with Lush bath bombs are a good start.
  • Cut back: make sure to say NO when I need to.
  • Get an early night: things always seem better in the morning.

I find it really hard to say no to people. I always want to be superwoman and to give the impression that I can do anything. I don’t want to show weakness or vulnerability. However, sometimes I just need to give myself a reality check and realise that I can’t do everything; I’m not superwoman. And you know what? That’s okay.

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed but what you need to realise is that getting overwhelmed with too many things stops you from doing anything. I’d rather do one thing well than three things badly. I’d rather go for one night out and have a good time than three nights out and be stressed out. Understand your limits and you’ll understand yourself.
